Must Have Retro Car Accessories

We've always had a love affair with our cars. Especially if it's your first car, no attention to detail is too great to try and make this symbol of freedom your very own. We spend countless hours washing and detailing them and hard earned money on accessories to try and put our mark on them and make them not only unique, but the envy of the neighbourhood.

Back in the day, these accessories had to include:

Foxtail

What better symbol of machismo could you possibly hang off the rearview mirror (other than a garter belt you caught at your cousin's wedding) to show you were a virile, hot stud on the prowl than a genuine foxtail? The bushier the better. Even though it impeded your view of the street and the dangers that lurked just beyond your dash, it showed you were an animal and an easy target for PETA.

Fuzzy Dice


If you were more of the gambling risk taker sort, you could always opt for a neat set of fuzzy dice. It would impede your view just as well as a foxtail but these came in all sorts of colors and designs and allowed you to really show some personality.......... or that you liked fuzzy things.

Dashboard Hula Girl

Although I've got one on my monitor as we speak, I never understood why people sported one of these on their dashboard. What message did it really give to other motorists? You liked girls in grass skirts? You were into Don Ho? You'd rather be surfin'? You never got over your freakish fetish for your sister's Barbies?


Racing Hood Locks

Although a must have accessory for any street legal machine that had the muscle to do damage on a race track, it always cracked me up when you'd see them show up on a stock Cavalier or Hyundai Pony right off the showroom floor.


Rear Window Louvres

As exotic sport car makers kept introducing us to sexier machines, the average guy longed to try to mimic the same effect on their own beasts. So maybe you couldn't afford a 1967 Lambo Miura or a Ferrari 312P, atleast you could hang plastic covers on your Firebird or Mustang. It's close.........right? (sniff....tear....)

Side Pipe Exhaust

Undeniably a bad ass accessory on a vintage muscle car or sweet street rod. Paired with a set of headers, it would give you the throaty rumble that announced to the world you had a car that meant business. It looked nasty and it sounded mean. Problem was that the same people that would put hood locks on a VW Rabbit would also put side pipes on a 1985 Crown Victoria. Just not the same effect.

Retro Video of the Day - Babe We're Gonna Love Tonight

Growing up in Canada in the 80s exposed me to many Euro inspired music groups and to be honest back then I wasn't that in tune with who was who in the music world so every once in a while I'd pick up on a group and think they were some avante garde, new wave group from the U.K. or France. Lime was one of those groups.  Formed in Montreal in the early 80s by the husband and wife team of Denis and Denyse LePage, they took full advantage of the exploding electronic music scene and created a bunch of Euro-disco inspired tracks. The story of Lime does have a few twists in it though (Lime twist.....get it ?....never mind) with some speculating that Denis and Denyse were in fact the same person that recorded both the male and female parts himself and used two attractive people to front the band when touring kinda like Milli Vanelli ended up doing years later. Retro Video Mashup of the Day - Golden Age of Video

Every once in a while you come across a video that really makes you marvel at the dedication a person can have towards their craft. In this case, it's a clip titled "Golden Age of Video" which is made up of bits and pieces of classic movies and some retro gem TV shows. I posted the version with sub-titles because it is amazing how the creator, Ricardo Autobahn managed to find and splice (is that even a proper term for editing anymore? Am I dating myself? Do I care?) together all these relevant bits of dialog so seamlessly that it proves he's either really good at editing or has unbelievable amounts of time on his hands. Retro Music Producer of the Day - Arthur Baker

One of the driving forces in early hip hop and Electrofunk was DJ / producer Arther Baker. Starting as a club DJ in the early 70s, he began experimenting with the new electronic sounds of the day and began producing remixes on analog tape. Long before digital took over, to create a quality mix required skill and patience since most of what you were doing was pretty much live. You needed mad skillz back in the day not like these days were software downloaded for free can create a remix on a whim. Though you may not have heard of him, you certainly have heard his work since his collaborations include artists like Afrika Bambaataa and the Soul Sonic Force, Pet Shop Boys, Cyndi Lauper, Hall and Oats, Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, ABC, Nenah Cherry and New Order to name a few. R.I.P Corey Haim (1971 - 2010)

Canadian born actor Corey Haim was found dead today in his mother's apartment in Oakwood, California of an apparent prescription drug overdose. Wow this blog is really turning into a retro obituary column but it really sucks when you're writing about someone who didn't need to die. Corey Haim was one of the two Corey's, who along with fellow child star Corey Feldman, starred in many films in the 80s and early 90s like The Lost Boys, License To Drive, Murphy's Romance, Dream a Little Dream and Lucas. He later became a reality TV star on A&E with Corey Feldman in "The Two Corey's" as the show chronicled the comeback attempt of both Coreys. Tragically it only showcased the spiraling descent that eventually claimed Corey Haim's life.
