R.I.P. Captain Lou Albano (1933 - 2009)

Growing up in the 80s, you knew exactly who Captain Lou Albano was. You either knew him as a goofy wrestling manager from the WWF or as Cyndi Lauper's dad in her video for "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun". Lou died Wednesday of natural causes in his home at the age of 76. Not something many modern wrestlers can claim.

Lou's wrestling career began in 1953 and only held a couple of tagteam titles in the early days under the mob riddled moniker of "The Scicilians" but he really made his mark and rose to prominance in the "sport" when he managed some well known wrestlers from the 80s including The Russian Bear - Ivan Kolaff, The British Bulldogs, Don Muraco, The Wild Samoans and Greg "The Hammer" Valentine to name a few.

He became forever etched in mainstream pop culture when he appeared in Cyndi Lauper's video as her rather disgruntled father. That ushered in the era of "Rock and Wrestling" which was responsible for making the WWF a household name and also responsible for some of the most hideous music and videos of the era............ it hurts me to even remember that. I'm going to need a moment.
Regardless of what you thought of him, his antics, his rubber band facial piercings (still trying to figure that one out), his wild outfits or his acting skills which included the hit TV show Super Mario Brothers, he did leave his mark in pop culture and is survived by his wife, 4 kids, and 14 grandchildren.

Retro Heatwave Video of the Day - Hot In The City

People say that relentless heat can mess you up in many ways. It can make some people nauseous, dehydrate you, give you a headache, make you drowsy or in some cases, it destroys your ability spell ! I'm not bying itt thoughh. I thunck thets a lode of crips.  Yup, it's been a pretty hot one this week with temperature records being broken, hydro grids being strained to the limit and people with air conditioning suddenly having friends over unexpectedly. You can actually buy a raw steak and cook it on your dashboard during the drive home.  While some would say this heat wave is a result of global warming, others say it is the coming of the end. I just think it's a great excuse to hear a great summer retro classic !

R.I.P Corey Haim (1971 - 2010)

Canadian born actor Corey Haim was found dead today in his mother's apartment in Oakwood, California of an apparent prescription drug overdose. Wow this blog is really turning into a retro obituary column but it really sucks when you're writing about someone who didn't need to die. Corey Haim was one of the two Corey's, who along with fellow child star Corey Feldman, starred in many films in the 80s and early 90s like The Lost Boys, License To Drive, Murphy's Romance, Dream a Little Dream and Lucas. He later became a reality TV star on A&E with Corey Feldman in "The Two Corey's" as the show chronicled the comeback attempt of both Coreys. Tragically it only showcased the spiraling descent that eventually claimed Corey Haim's life. Corey's Full Page Ad in Variety Magazine Feb 2008 Although he was working, none of the films or appearances were able to recapture the fame that his early career brought at a young age. This is what kept him turni...

Evolution of the Coke Bottle

There is no logo in the world that is more recognizable than the Coca Cola company's flagship product. Coke and its classic bottle design are a symbol known all over the world. It's gotten to the point you don't even need to have the word Coke in an advertisement as long as the distinctive bottle shape is there somewhere in the image. The classic shape has evolved over the last hundred years and has gone from a rather boring square shaped bottle to the curvy silhouette it now maintains. Below is a timeline picture showing the changes over the years . The shape is also responsible for designers of other products to be inspired by the sexy elements of the bottle, most notably  car designers. there are many examples but one of the best is the 1968 Corvette. The evolution of the bottle continues with many commemorative issues produced for various promotions but one of the latest trends was the availability of metal bottles as well.  There is no doubt the bottle will...

Random 80's Movie Prick of the Day

Growing up in the 80s and 90s it would have been impossible for you not to have seen Pretty in Pink. If you were a guy growing up in the 80s, most of you were probably wondering why they kept casting Molly Ringwald as the female love interest in all those teen movies. Was everyone else simply not available? Was it her pouty lips? Did she do the movies for free? If they ever remade that film again, I can guarantee they wouldn't be casting a pale, scrawny girl for the role. I can see Megan Fox in that role. Okay - maybe that's too much but hey - she definitely looks pretty in pink! She'd have to get a restraining order on Duckie for sure. Back to topic though. In the movie, the chief protagonist was Blayne's best friend Biff who was played superbly by James Spader. James is a great actor and watching him on Boston Legal is simply a treat and certainly deserves his Emmy for that role. In the movie he kept trying to convince Blayne that Andy (Molly Ringwald) was nothing sp...
